President's Report

I want to give a special “Shout Out” to Susan Robinson who keeps up with our Yahoo Group Site in posting Polls, recording attendance, updating our data, and for her never-ending patience and helpfulness in helping our members with their problems answering the polls and/or accessing the group site.

Also I want to give a special “Shout Out” to Hilda who has served us many ways in OLD’s history.  Particularly for all her Service Reports which she chose to carry out by sharing things that were important for us to know about.

Service

September

Sisters, with all of the disasters currently facing the North American continent and the Caribbean, please do what you can to help.  We are not all able to go directly to the scenes to help out but you might assist with collecting clothing and housewares to send. Perhaps your church is spearheading a drive.  Check with them to contribute or to help.  If you are close enough, offer food or drink to those in destress and those who are lending a hand.  Even a few batches of cookies or some cocoa will brighten someone’s day and warm someone’s hear..  Diapers and feminine products are always needed and often forgotten.  There are a couple of websites set up for this purpose:

For diapers: http://texasdiaperbank.org

My daughter, Cris has arranged for a feminine product site at:   https://kissmytulle.com/HelpforHarvey

You donate and they will ship direct.  If you know of other sites do share with us.

The future is in our hands and we can band together to offer love, support and needed items.  Remember, we are known by our actions.  We can show that we care even in these small ways.  The hurricanes, flooding and fires surround us but our love can still shine through.

October

Sisters,  Service to our fellow beings comes in many shapes.  Some of us can afford to donate to worthy causes but others feel sad that they cannot afford to help.  We all can find a way to bless those around us.  Many school districts have a service opportunity for men and women of any age or affluence.  It would require an hour or two once a week but usually the volunteer can choose the time.  Ask at a local school if you can come in and read to or listen to students.  Many schools have reading programs set up especially for guests to come and work with the kids.  We can’t all do magic tricks to entertain the little ones but we each can awaken the awe in a young person’s heart when they first hear a wonderful story.  Whereas, some kids are so proud that they have someone to show off their new developed skill of reading.  Be that one person and you will reap many rewards.

Membership

Only 17 were present  for our September meeting.  I really think many of you may be reading the minutes, but are not marking your presence on the poll.

Please let us know that you are still with us by acknowledging that you have read the meeting by posting your attendance via the poll.  Having almost half of our membership (14 of 31) not marking their  attendance is not good.

We are getting ready for the upcoming Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Trading recipes, and sharing what or how we celebrate. Back to our visitors, we are currently voting on one of the ladies. We hope everyone will have a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, and Happy Hanukkah

In September, Chris M-H presented the social/program on the history of the Iditarod.  We all joined her on the BSP bus which is covered in yellow roses and large BSP letters on the side.  We are headed to Alaska and while on the way we had a special box dinner.  We had a choice of chicken parmigiana rice ball or a broccoli and cheese rice ball along with a small salad and mixed fruit cup.  There was iced tea, raspberry iced tea, coffee, tea, lemonade, water and milk.  For dessert we had a variety of cookies and brownies.  She shared her pictures of her recent trip to Alaska.

In October, we welcomed four sisters interested in joining our online chapter.  For our program, we learned about what “day” our birthday was……It seems that every day is "something" Day.  So lets look at that dilemna more closely.  There are International days, weeks and months.  These are dates that are proposed by United Nations members and are established by resolutions.  A few of these would be April 2 - World Autism Awareness Day, Jun 5 - World  Environment Day, Dec 1 - World AIDS Day and today is Oct 18 - Conflict Resolution Day and World Vasectomy Day. The common theme is an issue that affects all countries.

Then there are the National Days (US).  Sorry didn't find one for Canada.  This month is: Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month to name a few.  But there are 31 days this month and most days have several remembrance days.  For example, Oct 18th is National Chocolate Cupcake Day, National no beard Day, and National Get Smart About Credit Day amongst others.

Crazy huh?  Well now lets have some fun.  Here are some websites with these days listed.  Find a strange or funny day and post it to the chapter. The stranger the better.  After all this is Halloween season.

We enjoyed our programs in both months!

On Line Beta

Online Beta had one visitor at the October meeting who was with us because she missed a land meeting. It was wonderful having her with us!

Some members planned to attend the October Conference in Cooperstown, New York.

This month I will spend time to share about our Program and Social.

The Program and Social for Online Beta. Our October Program was on Getting Organized for the Future.  Jennie shared information her husband gathered for an outreach to Vietnam Veterans, but everyone can benefit from the guidance about important life documents, bills, and health care issues. The issues shared are very impotant and everyone would benefit from the advice.

The Social was at a winery and we enjoyed learning about not only wines, but apples, cider, and donuts at a Massachusetts Orchard.

Joyfully submitted,

Joanie N.
