President Report

I would also like to welcome our new members. I am sure that they will have a rewarding experience as a member of OLD.

I would also like to congratulate Bobbi on behalf of OLD for receiving the Award of Distinction at the convention last weekend. She is certainly a true BSP member and always thinks of someone other than herself. Congratulations !!!

Programs

July

Our program in July was all about the positive things that have happened in our lives because we ‘put our hearts into it’, whatever ‘it’ might be. We had examples such as learning to swim, joining Beta Sigma Phi, working for large organizations and showing dogs.

August

Our August programme was about western history and the life of Charlotte AKA Charles Parkhurst and generated lots of conversation. On November 3, 1868, Charlotte Parkhurst cast her vote in the national election, dressed as a man. She became the first woman to vote in the United States, 52 years before Congress passed the 19th amendment giving American women the right to vote!

Service

July

July's service report was based on the ‘make do and mend’ motto and shared ideas and instructions on how turn turn a tablecloth into a skirt and how to recycle old t-shirts to name a few.

August

Our August service report included a section on flower pressing and instructions on different ways to preserve flowers at home as well as pictures from a home project demonstrating the results.

Membership

A huge O.L.D welcome to Linda and Cathy who have recently joined our online chapter.

Socials

No Socials were presented in the last 2 months but are looking forward to those in the upcoming year.

Book Club

The book clubs next book will be in October and is ‘One Summer’ by Bill Bryson.

Koffee Klatch

July

July’s topic was about our favourite relatives. Most agreed that it was difficult to choose just one but sisters shared lovely stories of someone special to them. It was wonderful to read about all our cherished memories of those we hold dear to our hearts.

August

August’s topic involved the basic rules to follow when using a washing line and a poem was shared about the sociology of laundry. Lots of discussions about childhood memories of the washing line were had.

OLD Website

Our webmistress Karon has asked new members to provide pictures of themselves to update the website.

On Line Kappa

Online Kappa has been busy sharing our life happenings with our group. Of course school has started again for many members children and grandchildren. We have a couple of our members who continue to deal with serious health issues but who also do not let these health issues keep them from loving life, we admire those member's strength. One member added a new member to her family so now Erica has 2 lovely girls and 3 handsome boys. I personally have my first grandson, born 5 weeks early and growing quickly. Travel was a big topic over the summer. We welcomed back a member who had taken some time away, Leigh Ann.  Our programs and socials have been great, often our members share about their home town or a favorite vacation spot.  Unfortunately none of members were able to attend the convention but it looks like it was great!

Members are reminded to post their attendance and were asked to post something about themselves and to welcome our guests.

Cheryl also posted updates to the sign-up sheets for Book Review, Programs, and Socials.

Vice President  -  Five ladies were invited to attend the August meeting of OLP. Two ladies, Suzanne and Nicolina, who were invited to attend the June and July meetings accepted the invitations.  Moderator, Marcia sees to getting the prospectives online to the meeting for a 30 day visitation so they can have the whole experience and meet the chapter, then decide if they want to join our online chapter.

Service  -  Please remember to keep clicking. All free clicks are paid for by the sponsors of the sites: Greater Good, Hunger, Breast Cancer, Animals, Veterans, Autism, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Literacy, and Rainforest.

Sunshine  -  The following messages were sent: a welcome to Toni S for her pledge ritual and a welcome to Dana J and Beverly C, [aunt of Toni S] for joining On Line Psi.  A phone call was placed to VP-Karen D following her eye surgery.  Well wishes for a good summer were sent to the entire chapter.

Book of Beta Sigma Phi  -  A review of the BSP Bed and Breakfast Program was shared with the group. Sisters can host other sisters traveling through their home areas.

Social & Program  - Kathy gave a combined social and program. She gave a program on getting/staying fit, and invited us the Copper Sky Recreation Complex with her. They have so many activities - a track, yoga classes, a weight room, and fitness machines. There's also a beautiful pool and a fun looking playground for the younger crowd. I think we all enjoyed our visit to sunny Arizona, and were inspired by Kathy's hospitality and enthusiasm.

Website  -  If you want to add photos, please let Cheryl or Rose know.

Unfinished business - Sign-up sheets are still being competed for this year.

Bamboo Products: Good or Bad?

If you’re anything like me, you want to be as “green” as possible but don’t really have time to research each new claim. I mean, I recycle but I also try to reduce what I have to recycle… that requires energy too. For example, I get the big jugs of water when I need them and not the individual bottles. I turn off the water when I brush my teeth and I don’t water my lawn. Well, I was recently getting ready to purchase a new bamboo t-shirt. Bamboo shirts feel great (they’re soooo soft!)  and they’re environmentally friendly, right?!? Awesome! Everything was great until my colleague said… “Don’t do it!” Her husband is a chemical engineer and she offered the insight that while bamboo is mostly sustainable in terms of how it is grown, the chemical processes used to convert bamboo into other textiles is quite harmful to the environment. What?!?! All this time I thought bamboo was the way to go. So, as I usually do when my eyes are opened to another point of view, I do some research. There was, as always, some conflicting information. But what I now know is that I can get bamboo products that are thoughtfully converted and at least do less harm than non-organic cotton textiles, but alas, this requires research as well to find those companies. (Sigh.) There is an Oeko-Tex label that is supposed to be helpful in your search for good options (see link below). Below are just a few of the links I perused in an effort to learn more about this seemingly environmentally friendly material that requires potentially environmentally harmful ways of turning it into things we want.

This link discusses bamboo mostly in regards to its use in construction:

http://greenbuildingelements. com/2011/11/27/bamboo-good-or- bad-for-the-environment/

This link is just a blog article that points out some of the specific chemicals used:

http://blogs.wsj.com/ informedreader/2007/11/06/ bamboo-has-an-environmental- dark-side/

This link is obviously pretty biased, but leads me to believe that Gaiam is thinking about what they are doing!

http://life.gaiam.com/article/ how-eco-friendly-bamboo

This link makes you think about the “misleading” way things can be labeled and marketed:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ finance/property/green/ 8645517/Are-bamboo-products- really-the-eco-friendly- option.html

This link has me thinking about the health of the workers involved in the processes and the tiny fines companies pay when they “mislabel” things… not enough to make them change it. =(

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ finance/property/green/ 8645517/Are-bamboo-products- really-the-eco-friendly- option.html

This link gives insight into the “Oeko-Tex label” that may help us to know how the bamboo product was manufactured:

http://davidsuzuki.org/what- you-can-do/queen-of-green/ faqs/toxics/are-bamboo-towels- green/

And my list could go on. I hope this little look into the potential good and bad of bamboo has increased your awareness as it has mine. Enjoy the rest of summer and stay cool! I would love to hear from any of you who have found great companies who are thinking about the their bamboo product manufacturing. I especially love bamboo kitchen tools... cutting boards, utensils, etc. ... but now I need to think about where I'm getting them.

Our board was busy preparing our budget for the year, to be voted on and getting out the sign up sheets for committees.

We have had delicious recipes from recipe committee such as Butter Toffee and potato Rolls.

For service we were given sites to check out such as doublethedonation.com. provide grants to help out various charities. Also DonorsChoose.org, which allows direct support to teachers all over the US to help bring their classroom dreams to life.

Our program committee had a program on KC convention.  They shared stories, pictures and comments of the convention.

For our social, we were invited to Montreal for our Beginning day.  We stayed at the Marriott Chateau Champlain Hotel. We had night caps at the Lobby bar in the hotel, ate at L'Usine De Spaghetti, and we went shopping and took in different sites in Montreal. A wonderful Beginning day we had.

Hugs,

Madonna
