June and August, 2014

June saw the ending of one sorority year and the beginning of another.  We ended with a Mother's Day Tea.  It was beautiful and during our celebration we gave the Welcome Ritual to our two newest members, Adrienne and Ann.  They are both great additions to our group.  We had the installation of our new officers:  President - Kathy, Vice President - Rose, Recording Secretary - Cheryl, Corresponding Secretary - Jean, and Treasurer - Marcia.  With new committee chairmen appointed the new years is off with a bang.  We gave a cheer and a great thank you for the exiting officers for a wonderful, productive year.

August saw the start of a new year and a Pool and Grilling social hosted by Lib.  It was fantastic and the food was great.  I had never had the variety of grilled vegetables before.  The party went on until midnight.  Looks like it is going to be a good new year.   Our chapter this year is following the theme and are going to learn more about our sorority family tree with members telling of their fondest memories as a sister.  Should be interesting.  The book review is going to explore the world of books made into movies.  Should be interesting.  We are all looking forward to the new year.

  Beta hugs,
Kathy

On Line Kappa

Thank you for a lovely opening day program Jamie.  Online Kappa had a beautiful opening day program and luncheon too.  Our sisters Coco and her mother Carrie, along with their husbands Ross and Dan, cooked a wonderful meal for our chapter-a Santa Maria BBQ which was wonderful!  Coco lives in the country in Oregon on a small ranch.  She has a beautiful home surrounded by gorgeous scenery.  She grows many of her own vegetables, has bee hives which she harvests honey from and has her own chicken house!  It was a super day with delicious food and a great time touring Coco's home and ranch. One of our sisters has been ill and has just recently regained her strength through a stay at a rehab facility, Beth is due to be home soon!  We have been praying for her and appreciate your thoughts and prayers for her continued progress.

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend sisters,
Mary

• Book Club:

  ○ In July we discussed "Homecoming of Samuel Lake" by Jenny Wingfield.
○ For August and September we are reading and discussing "The Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline.

  • Koffee Klatch presentations included:

  ○ For July, Gina had us remembering strange words or phrases that find a way into our daily dialog. She shared with us the meaning of the word ‘bogan’, and asked us to share any words or phrases we learned growing up. There were many sayings we learned from our parents or grandparents. It was quite amusing discovering the similarities and differences geography plays in our language.
○ In August Camille suggested we reflect on trees, tell about our favorites and maybe share a story. Many a tale was spun about how trees affected our lives as children and as adults.

  • Our July Social was hosted by Bobbi Torchia. We climbed aboard our Magic Carpets and took a weekend trip to San Antonio, TX. There was some misbehaving on the carpets (disappearing travels, belly dancing, and a Man on board), tsk tsk. We had a great time visiting the Alamo, Schlitterbahn, The Texas Institute of Culture; we stayed at a great bed and breakfast and feasted on fine food when we had dinner out. A great time was had by all.

  • Programs:

  ○ Our July program was presented by Susan Robinson. We explored genealogy, our own family trees, and our famous (if any) ancestors.
○ Our August program was given by Theral Crutchfield. She had us recall our milestones in Beta Sigma Phi (from when we began as pledges until today) and ponder which degree we enjoyed the best. There was a very broad spectrum of answers but the consensus seemed to be that each degree was special in its own way and provided us with its own unique benefit.

  • Service:

  ○ Hilda Braly continues to awe us with her insightful Service programs. June and July was an indepth look at diseases that can be revealed by an eye exam.
○ In August, Hilda discussed ways to protect yourself from Identity Theft.

  • Chapter Chatter:

○ Harlene has been extraordinarily busy with her band concerts and practices.
○ Gina and Lucille met in Melbourne for lunch.
○ Ann Stone is having several more surgeries and we are trying to connect her with some sisters in the Seattle area since she will be there away from home and family.

Our member, Barbara, was a gracious hostess and invited us all to San Francisco to celebrate OLT's Beginning Day! It was a fun and enjoyable time for all and nothing was interrupted by a little earth movement!

Members continued to do Service Clicks during the month.  We are very good at this!

We continue to have a long list of needed prayers for our members and family members.  We are very supportive of each others needs.

Some members plan to attend the International Convention in 2016 - an exciting time!

Online Beta Our program and our social was a hoedown. Pictures was shared and music of having a hoedown in Barnes with lots of music and square dancing. Lots of the sisters shared their memories of learning how to square dance and also having hoedown when they were younger.
We had one sister that shared a picture in her square dancing outfit and she still square dances.

Our craft this month was a beautiful necklace made from ribbon and washers, it's amazing what you can do with washers you can paint the washers and bake the washers and thread them through a ribbon to make a pretty necklace.

Our recipe committee also sent out delicious recipes.

Hugs,
Madonna
