Sharing Reports - May 2006
OL 118 is proud to now be an official chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
We have welcomed a few guests to one of our meetings and have several new
members we are proud to say and to welcome. Our cap is 30 which we are now
at, but, we continue to have a waiting list. We celebrated our seventh (7th) anniversary along with Founder's Day this year. We had our first OLS Reunion several years ago in New Braunfels/San Antonio, Texas and are now getting ready (and excited)
to have this years OLS Reunion in Muskegon, Michigan, hometown of our past
President Sharon Long.
Our newly elected and installed officers are: President - Jacki
Vice-President - Evelyn Recording Secretary - Eleanor
and Corresponding Secretary - Theresa
Our programs have all been interesting and fun the last two or three months.
In March we celebrated "National Craft Month" by telling about the crafts we like
to do, what crafts we would like to learn and told about something someone had
made for us special. Then in April our program was "April Showers Bring May
Flowers" where we shared the flowers in our garden and yard. This month of
May our program took us back to our own high school graduations....the music
we listened to then, movies and books and what was going on in the world at
the time of our graduation.
As On Line Sigma's motto states remember ...... There are Angels Among Us.

We had our 2nd gathering last year in Nashville, TN. It was such a great
time. I am sure we will be planning another gathering next year! Our first
gathering was in Las Vegas 3 years ago.
February's Program was on the Good The True and the Beautiful - our Theme of
the year. We were reminded of these important aspects of our sorority.
Since March is Womans History Month our program was concerning this topic.
As recently as the 1970s womens history was virtually an unknown topic in
the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness. In 1981, Senator
Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) co-sponsored the first
Joint Congressional Resolution designating the month of March as Womens
History Month. The popularity of women's history celebrations has sparked a
growing interest in uncovering womens forgotten heritage. In many areas,
state historical societies, womens organizations, and groups such as the
Girl Scouts of America have worked together to develop joint programs. Did
you know that the original idea and patent that led to cellular phone
technology comes from the movie star, Heddy Lemar?
April's program concerned the Flagler Museum. Whitehall was the winter home
of Henry Flagler, a leading figure of America's Gilded Age. Flagler was a
founding father of Standard Oil, the most profitable corporation in history
and he was the earliest and most important developer of Florida. Flagler's
Florida East Coast Railway linked the entire east coast of Florida from
Jacksonville to Key West. The series of luxury hotels Flagler built along
Florida's east coast and the 2 million acres of land developed, established
agriculture and tourism as the foundation of Florida's economy during the
last 100 years. This museum is a must see if you are ever in Palm Beach just
to see the very wealthy lived and played. On March 30, 1902, a story in the
New York Herald described Whitehall, the Palm Beach home of Henry Flagler
as, "More wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent
than any other private dwelling in the world..."Flagler built the 55-room,
60,000-square-foot Gilded Age mansion, Whitehall, as a wedding present for
his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. The couple used the home as a winter
retreat from 1902 until Flagler's death in 1913, establishing the Palm Beach
season for the wealthy of the Gilded Age.
Our socials included Founder's Day and a virtual trip to the home of one of
our southern sisters where we enjoyed a day of picnicing, hat making,
fishing, and boating on the lake behind her house.
We have one new member to our chapter this month and another prospective
member has contacted us. We still have openings for more members at the
present time.

OL 102 has had an exciting couple months. We have our elections in December and our new officers were installed at that time. Our 2006 officers are:

Our program committee has come up with some interesting programs so far this year. In April our program was on genealogy. Members told about one of their ancestors they admired and were asked to tell us why that person was so special to them. We also shared family stories that had been passed down from one generation to the next. We have quite a few sisters in OLB who have been tracing their family roots for years.
For our May program we were asked the question: "If you could chose a period in history that you would have like to live in; tell us when and how you would feel about it. With all the reading that many of you do, where would you have like to live? Lets have fun dreaming of another life in another time"
Our April social was our online Founder's Day. Our social committee with the help of Cathy HIlden did an awesome job putting this together for us. It is still on our web site and can be viewed at:
www.cawamn.com/OnLineBeta/foundersday/fd06start.html
On May 12 we celebrated National Limerick Day for our May social we learned about limericks, the history of limericks and then we all tried our hand at creating some silly rhymes. We have some very clever, creative sisters in our group.
On Saturday, May 13th we celebrated Legacy Day with an online virtual tea for our legacies. Our Legacy committee has been hard at work keeping in touch with all our legacies and sending birthday greetings to them. At last count, we have 20 legacies.
Last month we welcomed three new members. One of the new members was a brand new pledge. We conducted an awesome virtual Pledge Ritual as part of our May meeting. I have the ritual saved and will gladly share it with anyone who is interested.
I look forward to getting to know everyone in Cyber Council this year.
Beta hugs,
Dianne
