How To Use Penpoint Prospective Members Bulletin

1. Give each member a PENPOINT BULLETIN and pencil.
2. Explain how the bulletin works:
  • LOOK at each category
  • THINK of people you know
  • WRITE their NAMES ONLY on category side of bulletin
3. TIME this name-gathering exercise for 7 minutes.
4. After 7 minutes, ASK every member to share ALOUD names she wrote on her list.
5. On back of bulletin, LIST (SELECT) those you wish to invite to your next rushing event.
(Use telephone book, directories, newspapers for addresses/references)

PLEASE NOTE: THIS WILL WORK IF MEMBERS REALLY WANT IT TO!!!

When thinking of women to rush, the best results come from GROUP ACTION: members talking together so that the ideas one member has will stimulate other ideas from the rest of the members. Many a Vice President has been discouraged by the blank looks from members when she asks, "WHO SHALL WE RUSH?" Don't let that first reaction get you down. Consider the following reasons about why such a reaction is normal. Then use the suggestions to bring out the POSITIVE THINKING and power of your members.

Think of it this way: If you were suddenly asked to put down the name of your favorite song, what would happen? Your mind might go blank. Or you would be so busy mentally selecting the favorite song, that you would forget many songs - but you would have to make a decision as well as think of song titles.

One the other hand, if you were asked to mention as many song titles as you could in 7 minutes, you'd have a long list. In that case there is no decision involved so your mind can work fast. Later you can go over your list and select your favorite song much more readily. It's the same principle with thinking of who to rush: first think of names - any names - then from those names select the ones you will rush.

When members are thinking alone, they don't have the stimulation of ideas from other members. So, work together using ideas from one to stimulate ideas from the others. And you're going to impress on the members that the first step is to think of names of people - ANY PEOPLE - not just women to be rushed. Assure members that the next step will be to go over the names to select rushees. On the first list of names you many get a man's name. Where there's a man there's a woman not far away - consider his wife, sister, woman friend, secretary. If you have the name of an older woman on your list, think of her daughters, nieces, neighbors, sister, etc.

Remind members that they are not going to think of just women they already know. A CHAPTER NEEDS TO LOOK OUTSIDE ITS OWN INTIMATE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. One member may see a woman in her bank for instance, but doesn't know her - may not even know her name. Another member may know the name from the description. Or next time you are in the bank, look at the woman's nametag or ASK someone who that woman is. What a compliment it would be to that woman!

Individual chapters set a RUSHING GOAL. How many new members do you want?

To rush effectively, give personal attention to each rushee.

YOU CAN'T RUSH 100 WOMEN OR EVEN 50 AT ONE TIME AND GIVE EACH ONE
THE ATTENTION THAT IS NECESSARY. SELECT THE NUMBER YOU CAN RUSH
PERSONALLY - REMEMBER THE OTHERS CAN BE RUSHED LATER. RUSH
THOSE WHOM YOU CAN MAKE THE NECESSARY FOLLOW-UP PHONE CALLS,
GIVE PERSONAL ATTENTION, AND PLAN ACTIVITIES THAT WILL ATTRACT THAT
 PARTICULAR GROUP OF WOMEN.
