Script for the President re: Proper Steps of a Motion

A Suggestion to Chapter Presidents . . . .
If you need confidence in re: to handling motions during your chapter meeting, do what I have done. Printout the following & place it with your chapter meeting agenda. When the time comes, refer to it to make sure you are doing it right!

Script for the President re: Proper Steps of a Motion

1. "I move that . . . .(motion is stated by member)"

"I make a motion that ..." is incorrect.
2. Motion is seconded (by another member).
3. "It has been moved & seconded that . . . . (restate the motion)."
4. "Is there any discussion?"
5. Discussion is held.
6. "Are you ready for the question?"
7. "The motion is that . . . . (restate the motion)."
8. "All in favor say 'aye'."

"Those opposed say 'no'."
9. "The ayes have it & the motion is carried." Or . . . . . . . .

"The noes have it & the motion is lost."

A tie vote is a lost motion.

The President votes only once on a question by:
  1. Secret ballot
  2. Roll call & name is called last
  3. To make or break a tie.
