I feel rather foolish having to ask this question and hope you can help me. I am preparing for the pledge ritual and am confused. I am looking at page 9 of the Ritual Book,(2005 copyright) #3 Cue "Then take your places in the circle" Obviously there is something that I am supposed to say and something that the Pledges are to respond to. I have read and re-read the Ritual and for the life of me I cannot find it. I have read page 16 and it appears that once I say "let the enter" there is nothing that leads in to "Then take your places in the circle". What am I missing?

Joan, I don't have a ritual book, but if my memory serves me correctly the new pledges are not in the room at first. The sister reading the ritual says something like, who seeks admittance in Beta Sigma Phi, and a chapter member says their name...that's when they join the circle. I hope this helps. Sisterly

I'm going from memoryhere (but I've given this ritual lots of times over the years), as I'm in bed resting this leg, but here goes. There is first the "Who seeks admittance to Beta Sigma Phi" and the attendant at the door says "___ and ___ seek admittance into Beta Sigma Phi", then the officiant says (what you have below) "Let ______ and _________ enter". The candidates are then brought by an attendant to the ritual table and are asked by the officiant "Do you seek admittance into Beta Sigma Phi? If so, answer "I do". " When they answer, the officiant then says "Then take your places in the circle" and the attendant guides them to their place. Of course, if it's just one person, she just is asked to step back, there is no "circle". (The rest of the chapter forms a second circle around the candidates, but the "circle" referred to is the pledges and the officiants behind the table making a circle.)

Hope that helps. :-)

I have an older version of the book of rituals and the pages are not numbered.
In the Pledge Ritual the President (or officiant) reads "Who seeks admittance into Beta Sigma Phi?"
Door attendant replies" Friends we have invited to join us"
You reply "Let them enter"

(After they have been brought into the room by the door attendants - you continue to read starting at " My friends we are here to explain to you ................

There are two versions of the Pledge ritual and the older version is:

(Before the admittance of each two candidates the President speaks: "Who seeks admittance into Beta Sigma Phi?"
Door attendant replies: (giving full name of each candidate)_____________ and ___________ seek admittance into Beta Sigma Phi."
President responds: "Let _____________ and _____________ enter."
(The candidates are then brought into the room and stationed before the ritual table, the attendant remains standing just a step back of the candidates.
President: "Do you _____________ and ___________ seek admittance into Beta Sigma Phi? If so, answer 'I do'."
Candidates: "I do."
President: "Then take your place in the circle."

Does that help????

The Pledge Ritual starts with a knock on the door.

Officiant speaks: Who seeks admittance into Beta Sigma Phi?

Door attendant replies: (name) seeks admittance into Beta Sigma Phi.

Officiant: Let (name) enter.

President: Do you (name) seek admittance into Beta Sigma Phi? if so, answer, "I do."

Candidates: I do.

President: Then take your places in the circle.

Hope this helps. Congratulations on your new pledges.

Beta Hugs,
Dianne Kent
